LD SERPAN, on the reverse UBS 10, 63 × 42 cm, SERPAN, Oct. 1966Jaroslav Serpan, a Czech-born painter living in France, developed a distinctive form of surrealism in the post-war period, in which he continued the experiments of his predecessors from the 1930s. A little later he moved to calligraphic expression and then to an impressive painterly gesture. From these paintings it was only a step to joining the distinctive current of European Informel. He developed this distinctive style from the late 1950s to the second half of the 1960s. The painting entitled UBS 10 is a typical example of the artist's work from this period, which preceded the final stage in which he combined order with a playfulness close to Pop Art.
