Ladislav Sutnar 1970, LD "Venus / chacing butterflies"After his retirement in the United States, Ladislav Sutnar devoted himself from 1963 to
paintings of Venus, which he depicted as icons of mass culture and prototypes
of emancipated American women. The large-scale paintings were based on
geometric composition, contrasting bright colors and modernist
and differed markedly from American art of the time.
production. Sutnar, best known for his unique interwar
design in Czechoslovakia at the time, his late painterly style
he called Joy-Art,
as a humorous and critical reaction to pop art and op art
and emphasized their utopian, vitalistic meaning. During Sutnar's lifetime
Venus did not receive wider recognition, but they are now regularly exhibited
and are part of important international collections.
