Short item description
Wasserbauer's glass work has the character of robust sculptural objects made of colored glass melt. The author uses its specific properties and malleable possibilities to create abstracted sculptures. In them, a reduced geometric solution of volumes is applied, often supplemented by an organic or vegetal motif with a structured surface. An important role in the creative process is played by working with a matte and polished surface and, above all, with the effect of natural light falling on the object. While the matte surface of the sculpture reflects and scatters light, which plastically models it in space, the polished surface absorbs light, transmits it inside and reveals the inner space of the sculpture. The effect of light, multiplied by colored pigments, is unique. The light and color qualities of sculpturally conceived objects made of noble material make them sublime works of art.
Jaroslav Wasserbauer's glass work loosely follows the strong tradition of the Czech glass school, which was formed at the turn of the 1950s and 1960s. Its circle included primarily students of Josef Kaplický at the Prague Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design, namely Stanislav Libenský, Miluše Roubíčková, Vladimír Kopecký and Václav Cígler, who raised glass sculpture to the level of monumental sculptural work. Since the 1990s, J. Wasserbauer has been engaged in molten sculpture, in which he draws inspiration from both living and non-living nature, especially the vegetative forms of sea anemones and underwater mushrooms, which fascinate him. In 2013, he participated in the designs of glass awards for the winners of the Biathlon World Championships.
