Short item description

From his beginnings, Vladimír Komárek arranged objects in the pictorial space frontally; however, he does so most consistently in recent years, particularly in figural compositions. He develops this concept, in which one can see an echo of the frontality of figures in Byzantine icons or the Munch-like gradation of the pictorial organism, with regard to the psychological effect of the work.

The hieratic nature of Vladimír Komárek’s paintings and prints is supported by a composition often built on the central vertical axis (in some works, slightly shifted to the side). The painter links this fondness for symmetrical balancing of the pictorial area with memories of moments at the festive table and emphasizes it by pointing out that the simple people of his youth centered everything. (V. Komárek, exhibition catalogue, Liberec 1983). Whatever the inherent motivation of this compositional solution, the way the author uses it is neither stereotypical nor unambiguous.
