The painting work of Bohumír Matal is primarily associated with the aesthetics of Group 42, whose characteristic features—such as the poetics of the city and its periphery, machinery, technology, and the fate of man in the city—persisted in various variations throughout Matal’s work for his entire life. Matal joined the group after the end of the war as the youngest and the only member from outside Prague. This testifies to his exceptional painting talent, which was evident already during his high school studies at the Brno School of Applied Arts (1937–1941), where he was prematurely offered an academic title. Over the years, the human figure and its immediate surroundings become increasingly abstracted and distant from the real model in Matal's paintings.
