Congo, Bakuma, 2nd half of 20th century, oblong textile from faffia, size 64,5 x 51 cm. In 17th century this sized textile was called libongo. According to historian Phyllis Martin, these square pieces of textile were used as a currency. Pieces of textile were tied together and consisted of 5, 10, 20, 40 or 100 pcs. (according to their value). This material was very fashionable in late renaissance and became a part of many cabinets. Abstract decor on these textiles inspired many famous artists such as Paul Klee or Henri Matisse. Expertise of Mgr. J. Jirousková
