The existential painter Vít Soukup was an unmissable figure on the Czech art scene at the turn of the 20th century. He worked mainly in the circle of the art magazine Divus. At that time, in a somewhat nonconformist manner, it recorded the artistic achievements of authors such as Josef Bolf, David Černý, Jiří Černický, and the prematurely deceased Ján Mančuška. V. Soukup's work is divided into monothematic cycles, with a weakness for personal kitsch objects and pop-cultural icons. Soukup's painting is an important contribution to the contemporary discussion about the medium of painting. He chose his images from comic book stories, instructions from DIY magazines, and offers from advertising leaflets or ordinary newspapers.
