Short item description
The offered picture of České Středohoří (Bohemian Central Highland)s from 1977 represents a unique
example of Vladimír Kokolii's early painting work from the period of his student
years at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague.
Although the painting was in the second half of the seventies in the Czech
art was on the decline, Kokolia was consistently devoted to
and honestly to the medium of painting through the traditional category of
plein air landscape painting. He explored the carrying capacity of this genre for contemporary
art, coming to terms with its legacy and capturing typical scenery
hilly Bohemian landscapes with cottages, in which he also inserted humorous
details, such as a typical Czech gravel truck, anchoring the scene in a
specific contemporary context.
The earthy colour palette and the compositional schedule demonstrate Kokoli's
sovereign talent as a painter, which he fully developed in the second half of
1980s, when his work shifted to painting abstract
three-dimensional structures.
